Children's Book Review - Rose's Journal, The Story of a Girl in the Great Depression

This book lets kids travel back in time to the 1930s with a young girl named Rose who lives on a farm in Kansas during the Great Depression. The pink pages of Rose's journal take readers on a journey to see for themselves just what life was like from month to month on the farm. It also includes information about what was happening across the nation back then. Historical black and white photographs make this journal seem more real and help to give kids a glimpse of just how bleak life was for a girl like Rose.

Rose's Journal is an enjoyable way for young readers to learn about one of the most fascinating periods in American history - when Amelia Earhart made her solo flight from Hawaii to California, yet times were so tough for most Americans that they lived by this motto for making do with what little they had: "Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without."

The journal is printed on lines which look like notebook paper, as if each page were handwritten by Rose. It includes drawings of important things in Rose's life, like her puppy, the radio (which was a big part of everyone's life back then), and her family, etc. Kids and adults alike will find this to be an entertaining read that leaves them with a good idea of just difficult the Great Depression, dust storms, and droughts must have been for someone like young Rose.

Dermatologist Acne Treatments for a Guaranteed Flawless Complexion

Lead a blemish-free life and that includes your face too. Banish the bane termed as acne forever. However, acne treatment is not a quick fix solution. Go in for an acne treatment that guarantees not only relief for the time being but also deters a relapse.

Acne is caused by accumulation of dead skin cells, overactive oil glands or an attack by the P. acnes bacteria. Acne treatment involves striking at any one-root cause or taking a multi-pronged approach. However, the best acne treatment is to be decided only by the dermatologist and it may be that the nature and severity of the acne problem, the patient's age, lifestyle and medication routine may merit an individualized treatment.

Generally, acne treatment is categorized into three broad spectrums. The most common, however, an instant but temporary cure is by killing the bacteria that are caused by the blocked follicles. This is done either by the intake of antibiotics like tetracycline, or by treating the affected areas externally with bactericidal substances like benzoyl peroxide. As one can guess, it does nothing to control the oil secretion that is the root of all blocked follicles and henceforth, acnes, return successfully after the treatment is successfully over.

The second method is by reducing the secretion of oils from the glands. This is done by a daily intake of Vitamin A derivates like isotretinoin over a period of a few months. The drug has a much longer effect than anti-bacterial treatments and often cures acne for good. The treatment requires close medical examination by a dermatologist since the drug has many known side effects.

The third, popular, acne treatment involves exfoliating the skin. This process encourages the peeling of the top layer of skin to prevent a build-up of dead skin cells which combine with skin oil to block pores. It also helps to unblock clogged pores.

Severely sore cysts require the injection of interlesional corticosteroid, which acts by melting the cyst within 3-5 days and prevents scars. Isotretinoin is an effective acne scar treatment. It works by reducing the activity of the oil glands and is widely regarded as the most effective drug to fight cystic acne. However, this pill has serious side-effects on liver and the nervous system and as such should not be used during pregnancy.

Oral contraceptives like norgestimate, ethynodiol and norethindrone acetate work against acne by decreasing the activity of the oil glands.

For people sensitive to some acne drugs, sodium sulfacetamide is an effective alternative treatment.

Laser therapy, which scrapes away the top layer of the skin, thereby removing the dead cells, is an effective acne treatment with enduring effects. This peeling of the skin is also achieved by the increasingly popular TCA peels. Easy to use, these peels reach deep into the skin coming up with results that last up to a year. Not only do they remove the acne, but also prevent its recurrence. They are now available for home use (see the link below). TCA peels are the most cost effective acne treatment and should be a part of any acne or skin care regimen.

The acne treatment may sound easy but you should never indulge in self-medication. Some acne drugs are quite powerful and any misuse may trigger irreversible side effects. Nor should acne be treated by pricking the pimples. This causes scarring that even an extensive acne scar treatment cannot reverse. Catch them young is the motto of every dermatologist treating acne. So do not neglect even the tiniest blackhead.

Acne treatment is safe as long as you are in the right hands.

How To Stop Panic Attacks - 3 Steps You Must Take To Cure Panic Attacks

Panic attacks have become a modern plague. With over 20 million people in the United States alone who suffer from this affliction and many more around the world, you are far from being alone in this. Even though the causes of panic attacks and anxiety disorder are many and it's impossible to find one single cure for all the patients, many people all around the world have freed themselves of these attacks.

Regardless of how serious or frequent your attacks are, or why they occur, there are some necessary steps you need to take before you can cure yourself of panic attacks.

How To Stop Panic Attacks - 3 Necessary Steps: 1. Believe in yourself - Many people despair of ever finding a cure for their panic attacks. If you don't believe in your ability to put an end to these attacks, you have no chance of ever being free of them.

2. Be prepared to face your fears - The only way you will ever know for sure that you've become free of your attacks is if you face the things you fear and see that they don't distress you any longer. This is something you need to do after you begin the process of stopping your attacks, but it's a necessary step. Some people are so terrified of what scares them that they never know if and when they're cured.

3. Set yourself a goal of ending your attacks - Setting goals is the first step to any achievement. Set yourself a firm goal of overcoming your attacks. If you have that goal in mind, you will be more attuned to what causes your attacks and to the best way you can stop them.

Trimming Nose Hairs - A Male Grooming Guide

Fear Not, Nasal Hair Growth Is Normal

As men approach that golden age of 30 it is not uncommon to get odd strands of nasal hair protruding from the depths of your nose. The bad news is that once you start to notice these stray nasal hairs more and more nasal hair will start to emerge as you get older. Left untreated you run the risk of looking like one of those old chaps we've all seen on the bus who appears to have a rodent shoved up his nose!

Nasal hair is designed to act as a filter and prevent dirt from entering your nose. Nasal hairs act as a barrier against daily pollutants. These rogue nasal hairs have always been there but with time and hormonal changes they start to grow, and why they do this no one really knows.

Nasal Hair does perform an important function but if your nasal hairs are growing out of control simply give them a trim to avoid those unwanted stares!

Nasal Hair Grooming Tips

First things first, trimming unwanted nasal hair will not make them grow back thicker and faster. So relax and feel free to trim any nose hair that you are conscious of. There are a few do's and don'ts when it comes to trimming nasal hair so here are the m-sxl nasal hair grooming tips:

* Trimming is the key word in nasal hair grooming. You should never pluck nasal hairs, so don't use tweezers. Plucking not only hurts, but it can also cause small lesions that can lead to infection. In addition some nasal hair is good to protect your nasal passage and keep it clean. We only want to trim those unsightly nasal hairs.

* Trim the protruding nasal hairs with a pair of blunt-ended scissors or an electric nose hair trimmer. If using scissors take care and trim only as far as you can easily see in a mirror don't stick the scissors up your nasal passage unless you like the Daniela Westbrooke look! You may find it useful to push the tip of your nose upwards to give better access to trim your nasal hairs.

* The best way to trim unwanted nasal hair is probably with a nasal hair trimmer and there are a number of nasal hair trimmers on the market. Nasal hair trimmers are specifically designed to trim nasal hair quickly, safely and painlessly. Nasal hair trimmers trim nasal hair using either a rotating blade which spins in one continuous direction, or an oscillating blade which rotates left to right. Both styles deliver good results but it is believed that an oscillating blade is less painful. Again don't insert the nasal hair trimmer too far up your nasal passage; as mentioned earlier some nasal hair is necessary for protection against dust and germs. We are not aiming for complete nasal baldness just trimming the unsightly nasal hairs.

Recommended Nasal Hair Trimmers

Panasonic Nose Hair Trimmer

The Panasonic hair trimmer uses a rotary blade system with circular blade action, which effectively trims along the inside of the nasal wall. Equipped with a special "guide comb" around the blade, it is designed to prevent the blade from actually touching the skin, providing a smooth and clean shave.

Turbo-Groomer 5.0

The Turbo-Groomer 5.0 offers dual cutting heads with rotary blades made from Swiss surgical stainless steel. One interchangeable head has rotary blades that spin at 6,000 rpm while the other offers a more precise trimmer. It features two practical Ice White LED "headlights" that eliminate shadows, making sure you don't miss a spot.

Trimming those unwanted nasal hairs only takes a few seconds. When performed as part of a regular grooming routine it will really make a difference to your appearance. So don't let things get out of hand - make a habit of removing overgrown nasal hairs before someone else notices them!

"Strategies - A Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia Journey" by Tami Brady - Book Review

Tami Brady shares her story with us of her journey with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Until she was diagnosed with these disorders, she really struggled with fears about her health and limitations imposed by her symptoms. She was diagnosed in 1997 and along the way has learned what works and doesn't work for her. She also made many personal discoveries about herself and how her perceptions of herself and her behaviors can influence her conditions.

Nine years ago, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I already had two friends who had serious cases of it. When the doctor gave me eight prescriptions to help me deal with the symptoms, I decided that it was time to quit my stressful job and focus on recovering my health. I saw so many similarities between Ms. Brady's journey and my own. We both started out with overachieving personality types. We take on big goals that really just serve to put more pressure on our own health. For myself, I insisted on getting straight A's through two graduate programs, while sometimes working two jobs. As Ms. Brady discovered with her own overachieving efforts, it had serious implications on our health. We also both have gotten into heavy workout routines that our bodies are unable to maintain. I just went through a phase were I was trying to work out two to three times a day. I feel like if I am going to be in pain, I will give myself a reason to hurt. In the long run, as Ms. Brady discovered, this just hurts my self.

Another common issue that I see with people that have this disease is as she states, "No one sees scars or disfigurement so it's a shock to most people that you actually have something really wrong with you That we become incredible actors to mask and hide the symptoms makes the situation that much more difficult." I know that most people suffering from CFS and fibromyalgia can relate to this. There are still a lot of professionals that will tell us that it doesn't exist and it is in our head.

Ms. Brady discusses many common symptoms that come with having these conditions. I think the most common symptom is the pain that occurs in the trigger points. She also discusses what she calls "Fibrofog." It brought me great relief to read about this because I have this happen so much, I get anxious that it could be the start of Alzheimer's disease, at forty! It was a relief to see that it is part of the condition. The interrupted sleep sessions definitely exacerbate the bouts. I also share her experience with her legs giving out on her. Mine happens at times when I get out of bed. It is a scary experience.

In addition to discussing what doesn't work, Ms. Brady also discusses what she found helpful. Moderation with everything definitely seems to be very important. Reiki is also a good healing practice. I also practice Reiki. I found that either doing it on my self or others is beneficial. Healthy eating is important as well. Getting into fad diets is not the way to go. Our bodies let us know with pain, that we are doing something wrong.

To help us with a healing plan, Ms. Brady offers a series of strategies to help with certain symptoms. She gives her own personal examples and then offers blank charts so that we can fill in our own information. This is an excellent strategy for tracking symptoms, causes and treatments. This is a great way for you to organize a program and keep track of what works. There is an extensive list of resources to help you on your way. Applying these resources to yourself helps you to take charge of your own health. "Strategies" is an excellent resource for people at all phases of the disease. It is a relief to hear someone else share their story, and know that you are not alone.

Vacation Rental For The Family

Opting for vacation rentals is one of the best ways to keep a handle on your family vacation. Vacation rentals, rental cottages or cabins can be a great way to stretch your vacation budget too!

Not only will a week's vacation rental generally cost you less than the same time's stay in a local hotel, you'll save even more on meals because you have access to a kitchen.

Most major resort and vacation areas have dozens or even hundreds of short-term vacation rentals that are available throughout the tourist season, and sometimes year round. Choosing the right family vacation rental is a matter of figuring out what your family wants and finding a rental cottage or cabin that fits the bill. There are some particulars you should consider when looking for last minute vacation rentals.

Location

Where your vacation rental is will be nearly as important as what it is. Look for a rental cottage that's close to major attractions, especially the ones that are important to you. Some vacation destinations will offer far more flexibility in this than others. If you've chosen a week on Cape Cod, for instance, and your main interest is lazing on the beach for hours, you can find suitable cottages in Wellfleet, Truro, Onset, Dennis, Brewster, Orleans or any one of a dozen other little towns with long stretches of beach and ocean.

If, on the other hand, you're planning a family getaway with a particular destination in mind, you'll want to be sure that everything you want to see is conveniently located. If you decide on a Disney vacation, for instance, you'll find plenty of vacation rentals right in Orlando.

You'll want to check a map to see just how far they are from the parks you want to visit so that you don't waste precious vacation time stuck in traffic.

Space

Make sure there's room for everyone in your vacation rental. While it's not necessary - or even economical - to find a vacation rental with a private bedroom for each member of your family, you do want to be sure that there's enough room for everyone to be comfortable. Most vacation rental cottages and homes are designed to sleep multiple people per room. Make sure that you know not only how many rooms, but how many beds are available.

Shop carefully and you can find bargains like a three bedroom vacation rental in Big Sur, a few blocks from the beach, for as little as $40 per night. One caution, though. Be sure to check the fine print for what's included in the rental price. Cleaning and per person fees can quickly add up and spiral that bargain basement price out the roof.

On a longer vacation trip, you'll want to be sure that certain amenities are included. Your budget will thank you if laundry and kitchen facilities are included in the rental home you choose. The money that you save on restaurant meals and laundromats could easily add up to the admission fee to a nearby water park or a day of shopping in town.

Self Improvement Through Acceptance

Live by the following words and everything else will follow. Change the things you can change and accept the things you cannot change. Of course with this we also need the wisdom to see which things to change and which ones to accept that we can do nothing about.

Acceptance of the things you cannot change will empower you in many different ways. No time will be wasted by fighting battles which cannot be won. You will regain the power of laughter. As you relinquish a bit of control so does your sense of humor find a way back in your life.

I have a friend who is self employed. She has many ways that she employs to generate an income. One of the ways is a small company where she places vending machines at different offices. One day last week she found out that a major company that supplies all her crisps had burnt down. So no crisps for a while and loss of income for a while. The same day she found out that a major labor group were lobbying to end cheap imports from China. This came a week after she had received sole distributorship for her area to sell kitchen gadgets imported from China. I expected her to fall apart. Instead she called me laughing that she could not believe that so many things could go wrong and was looking forward to finding out what would be next as all bad news come in threes. What she chose to do after that was to source out some more office blocks who would be willing to house a few more of her vending machines and she received three very good leads that same afternoon. And her saying to me was "the lord taketh away and the lord giveth". That is a prime example of accepting the things you cannot change and dealing with the things you can.

Another way through which acceptance can help you to improve your life is to make excuses for people. Early morning and you encounter a fellow driver who seems to be experiencing some form of road rage by either driving very fast or trying to antagonize you by driving too close, instead of getting angry and fuelling his anger further imagine that perhaps he has just found out that there are layoffs at his place of work or there is trouble with his family. By accepting that your life is going quite well and realizing that some other people might be having more trouble, you prevent yourself from entering a situation which might have bad repercussions. Do not underestimate the power of empathy.

There are many more ways to improve your personal life and the trick is to start with the small things which you can change. By changing your attitude and modifying your reaction to certain situations will definitely help you achieve a more peaceful mind within the chaos we face daily in our lives.

The web is a wonderful source of ideas and information on self improvement. When we read on what other people are experiencing in their daily lives we can acquire a sense of how blessed we truly are.
